Premier League preview: West Ham play host to Liverpool at Upton Park

West Ham play host to Liverpool at Upton Park on Saturday Night Football, live on Sky Sports 1HD.
Brendan Rodgers' side have been far from convincing in the early weeks of the season after losing two of their opening four games and travel to West Ham aiming to bounce back from their shock 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.
Liverpool enjoy a good recent record at Upton Park, having won on four of their last five visits to east London, including last season's 2-1 victory.
West Ham have recorded just one win so far this term and Sam Allardyce will be hoping they can build on their 2-2 draw with Hull City on Monday as they twice came from behind to earn a point.
Allardyce's future remains the subject of speculation and he will be aiming to silence his critics with a first victory at Upton Park this season having lost to Tottenham and Southampton on their home patch so far.

Opta Stats

  • If Liverpool score in this game they will set a new club top-flight record of scoring in 17 consecutive away games.
  • There have been four own goals scored in the last seven Premier League meetings between Liverpool and West Ham.
  • West Ham have scored four goals from outside the box this season, matching their total from 2013-14.
Team news
West Ham will still be without a host of names for the game at Upton Park, with Matt Jarvis (thigh), Andy Carroll (ankle), Kevin Nolan (shoulder) and Joey O'Brien (knee) all missing and James Collins (hamstring) still a doubt.

But Allardyce could yet hand full debuts to Carl Jenkinson, Alex Song and Morgan Amalfitano after the trio all came off the bench in Monday night's 2-2 draw at Hull.

Defender Martin Skrtel returns to the Liverpool squad after recovering from a knee injury which has sidelined him for three matches.

Fellow defender Glen Johnson (thigh) is unlikely to be ready to come back while Jon Flangan has undergone an operation on a troublesome knee.

Midfielder Joe Allen has still not recovered from a knee injury sustained on international duty while Daniel Sturridge is edging closer to a return from a thigh strain.

Paul Merson’s prediction:

Brendan Rodgers got it horribly wrong against Aston Villa, if I’m being honest. He left out Raheem Sterling, who has been on fire and Gabriel Agbonlahor did very well to keep Steven Gerrard out of the game. I think if he selects his best team then they should win the game, as we saw against Tottenham the week before when they were outstanding. West Ham have been a bit more entertaining this year, but it’s all about getting results.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2
